1. I'm new to chickens as an adult, but I raised homing pigeons with my dad as a kid (over 50 birds). I obsessed for at least 3 years, even dreaming about owning chickens, before buying my first house, and getting my feather babies last year.

2. I have six hens right now. I'm already thinking about adding more next Spring though!

3. 2 Easter Egger, 2 Barred Rock, 1 RIR, 1 Black Copper Marans

4. I found out about Backyardchickens.com AGES ago when I first started contemplating raising chickens. I began reading everything I could, and really researching if I wanted to add X number of heartbeats to my household (I have a lot of pets). I was especially interested in the folks who built their coops on a budget, and how much chickens actually cost, as I had just bought a house, and was pretty broke!

Using your advice, we managed to completely recycle an ugly old aluminum shed into an 8X10 insulated chicken coop. The most expensive part was concrete for the floor, and the wooden shingles for the sides. We even used our old 80's style waterbed frame for some interior walls and the nesting boxes inside. I think our coop cost less than $50 and is awesome. I wouldn't have known where to start if it wasn't for your articles.

5. I love to garden (thus my Screen Name), though I just moved last year, and the soil at my new place is not up to snuff, compared to my old house. I'm also in a colder climate, so I've started using cold frames -- kind of exciting, in a dork gardening way. I am also trying to get two books self published, when I find time to edit. Being in the middle of Willamette National Forest, of course I love to be out hiking around -- it's gorgeous here.

6. Just me and my sweetie at home now -- we've been together 8 years. Two kids, both aged 20, (not twins, my son, his daughter), both in college, (an hour away from us). 2 dogs, 4 cats, 2 rabbits, 2 fish. I'm a former middle school teacher, my sweetie is a (brilliant!) singer/musician, and does construction/plumbing when he's not serenading me.

G’Day from down under Killer Tomato :frow Welcome!

Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable introduction.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

As Hope Hughes mentioned, if you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
