Can't believe how "computer challenged" I am - Please bear with me! I have spent more than an Hour trying to figure out how to post ! ;-/
Hi from Tennessee. I am not exactly new to chickens, Bantams were my first [all mine, not family] pets when I was 5. A little hen I helped hatch [yes, I know, shouldn't have survived] when I was home sick from school. When 9 we moved from Iowa to Arkansas and raised 100s of thousands of broilers at a time for Tyson.
Fast forward 50+ years and I am having a yen for Bantams again ;-) Was visiting a cousin in MD whose DH is a U of A trained Poultry expert, has a hobby of raising bantams, and exhibiting them at County Fairs. ANYWAY! while I was visiting, a clutch of 'renewing my stock' chicks was hatching, and he said I could have some! I could identify a Polish and a Cochin and then several cute, tiny 'quail looking' ones that he was fairly sure were Old English Game. FLASHBACK! 2 tht I was watcing hatch seemed to get caught early on in dried membranes - no progress the next morning - so I "helped them" by peeling off the shells. ;-) 1 of these didn't survive my 'help' - got chiled, then I overreacted and got her too hot! cooked ;/
So, How do you get 6 peeps home on a 12 hour drive in a cold snap? You use handwarmers, and a microwaveable corn bag - re-warmed at truck stops! Then set them up in a small dog crate with a brooder light. All of this without consulting my DH! His comment the next morning -- "I see you brought back some toys for the cats".
In the past weeks I have spent hours watching chicks grow, researching chickens ;-) , coops, free rane [not an option in town] sexing, what can be fed, etc. I have questions, so joined this group.
1] Does anyone have experience with the 'Alexandria' 6 hen coop? http://www.mypetchicken.com/PicturePop.aspx?image=/images/product_images/Popup/Alexandria-005.jpg
2} can you include coffee grounds in the kitchen scraps you feed pullets, Hens?
3] How can I post pictures to the forum?
