Hello from Oklahoma

LOL...yes the Roosters want to be the protectors of the flock.

23 days is getting a bit long for eggs under a broody with no chicks. You might candle the eggs to see if there is life in them. Take out one of the eggs and with a flashlight in a dark room, hold the large end of the egg right up to the bright flashlight. If the egg is really dark inside, there is a chick in it. If the egg looks really light, it is a dud.

However all this being said, if nothing hatches in a few days, they are probably not fertile eggs. Not all eggs are fertile and if the rooster hasn't been doing his duties with the bird that laid these eggs or not enough mating, they may not be fertile. Give them a few more days and see what happens. I sure hope something hatches! :)

So my mother in law and I took them into the bathroom without any lights and held my flashlight up to the eggs and there look like something in there! Now I may have my count off by a couple of days. Maybe in a couple of more days. If nothing happens by Thursday or Friday I will get rid of the eggs. I know my rooster does his duty with them a lot lol. If nothing happens I will try again. Offs there a way to check the eggs to see if they are fertile or is that an old wise tale?

Thank you very much Laurel Tree! These ladies give me about 5 to 6 eggs a day! We are going to have a couple little ones hatching any day now, fingers crossed and prayers said, if we are lucky

That is soooo exciting! Keep us posted on their development. 23 days would be a long time unless we are talking a breed like the Jersey Giant. *fingers crossed*

I had a RIR rooster I nicknamed Big Boy about 2 years ago. We had B&B on our property and one day I walked round there and got greeted by the rooster, who was free ranging in the gardens. I greeted him with an enthusiastic "Hello BIG BOY!", looked up and saw one of our paying guests on the porch, making a big production of shaking out his newspaper and pretending he didn't hear me

That was a bit awkward...

Good luck and fingers crossed for you hatch!
