I am new to poultry keeping and very excited to be here. I've been reading the forum here for a year (or two) but only recently joined.
Here's my story:
Last year I started breeding meat rabbits. I also wanted to get some cute runner ducks but DH said no.
Over the summer, right after dawn, my husband and I were leaving our place of worship driving home. On the on ramp to the interstate there was a goose running in and out of traffic! His/her buddy was stuck on the other side of the guard rail (aka. The safe side, the grassy shoulder.)
I screamed for my husband to pull over and I tried to get the goose to go over the guard rail or past it away from traffic. These were two Canadian geese btw. My husband was in the car trying to help me corral the bird but he honked the horn and the goose took a sharp left into the interstate across four lanes of traffic. I tried to get my husband to cut the car across traffic so I could grab the bird. He was hit by many cars and I'm still plagued by the images of him flapping off the ground as cars hit him. *cries*
Whenever he'd get a bit of speed he'd try to fly but could only get about 2 or 3 feet off the ground. I suspected they were domesticated and believe now they may have been pinioned since he flew in a straight line and not in a circle indicative of wing clipping.
I cried and cried for this goose.
Did I mention that a state trooper drove by and was going to pull us over until he saw me with the goose and I guess he lost interest.
Unfortunately it was during morning rush hour traffic and I couldn't get to the injured bird. I was actually going to take it to a vet or if too injured, euthanize it. It was such a violent death and I'm still quite traumatized by it. I wouldn't let my husband leave until it was surely dead or a break in traffic came. Unfortunately, it was the former.
Anyway, so here I am. I'm thinking of getting some barred rock hens for my backyard, but probably just going to stick with some ducks.
It's good to be here and I look forward to reading everyone's posts.
