Hello all you wonderful chicken people!

I'm going to use this fantastic template that was provided to share information about myself....cause I really have no idea what to say. I'm horrible like that. However, if there is anything else you want to know about me, please ask! I don't mind talking about myself...or most anything else.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Hmmmm....well, not completely new to chickens. When I was about 16, my parents got a small flock of Rhode Island Reds. If I remember correctly, there were 2 roosters and 5 hens. I have fond memories of the them. However, they didn't last more then a few years due to a few circumstances. First, the two roosters didn't get along so the smaller of the two ended up going to live with a friend of the family's. Then after a bit more time, the remaining rooster went to 'live on a farm with another friend'....or so I was told at the time, because he was aggressive towards my mom. He loved everyone else...and I used to cart him all over the place. Well, my parents told me a few years ago that when they said "go live on a farm", they meant they had to put him down and they find it funny that I believed the farm story! Hey...the first rooster went to live on a farm....what's not to believe!!??!!

Anyways...a few months after -that-, the chicken coop - which was located on the back deck of our house - caught on fire in the middle of the night due to something in the electrical. Luckily, I woke up and saw a weird reflection bouncing around the walls on the house and went to investigate....which was way before the smoke detectors went off. It was confined to the back deck at that point but by the time both I and my parents got out of the house with the dogs and cats and called 911 (which actually doesn't work too well when the phone line is burnt off the house and the cell phone is in it's infancy), it had jumped to the house and the garage. The fire chief actually is the closest neighbor we have so I drove down the hill to his house to call 911 and he directed them.

Long story short, good bit of damage done to the house and garage. Coop was gone as well as the chickens. However, the next day, my mom looked out the window and found two of the chickens alive under a tree. One was burned up a bit and the other was untouched. Both were treated for smoke inhalation but recovered. The chicken that had been burned molted her feathers and when they came back in, you couldn't even tell she had been hurt.

A year later, those two hens went to live on a farm with friends.....(and YES, a real farm...not the 'farm' the 2nd rooster went to.)

That's my experience with chickens. =-)

Now, my 10 year-old daughter has decided that after spending time with the barred plymouth rock hens at the horse training stable we train at, that she wants to raise chickens for 4-H. She conned my parents into letting use convert their unused three car covered wood carport with attached garage for the chicken coop and covered run. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on to prepare myself for being a chicken momma.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I have 15 lovely pullets in the brooder my husband made for them. The brooder is in our attached garage.

(3) What breeds do you have?

15 chicks....15 breeds

New Hampshire Red
Barred Rock Plymouth
Black Australorpe
Ameraucana
Iowa Blue
Buff Brahma
Light Brahma
Partridge Chantecler
Norweigan Jaerhon
Gold Brabanter
Golden Campine
Exchequer Leghorn
Silver-Laced Wyandotte
Dorking
Delaware

And with so much variety, you would think I would have been able to get the one breed that I -really- wanted but sadly, no. No cochin for me. I haven't been able to find any available.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Google. I think I found this site first when I was researching coops and have been lurking ever since for all the great information.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Hmmm....right now I'm fully immersed in horse training. I am leasing a wonderful gelding quarterhorse who is teaching me a lot about the world of horsemanship. I am also learning everything about caring and grooming horses and hope to be helping my stable out in such a capacity during show season this year as we have several championship reining horses in residence with us.

I live in Oregon...about 30 mins from Portland. Married for 11 years and have an almost 15 year old son and 10 year old daughter. My son is homeschooled through an online charter school...and my daughter will be as well next year. Both have forms of ADD and do much better with one on one attention that they haven't been able to get in regular school. I am a 4-H horse leader while my son is involved in the horse project and my daughter the chicken project.

So, that's me in a nutshell. Like I said before, if you have questions, feel free to ask. And oh...this is my post about the arrival of my new chicks in case you are curious:
