Hello from Orlando!

I've been lurking around for a little while, and decided that if I'm ever going to be serious about getting chickens, I might want to introduce myself. I am a wife and SAHM of 3 children (15, 13, & 9, one homeschooled). I've wanted chickens (and a multitude of other animals) since I was a little girl, but since I was neither raised on a farm, nor do I have one as an adult, I figured it would always be just a dream. I happened upon this site by chance after looking at something chick related (can't remember now) and was suprised to find that there are so many urban chicken owners around!!! As of yet, I don't have any chickens, but my plan is to have space ready for them by early 2011. I figured 4-6 would be plenty but amazingly my dh wants to build a larger space for as many as we can legally own! We also have 4 dogs; a lab mix from the pound, two strays we've rescued from abuse, a donated pug, and 2 ferrets, one of which was a rescue also. My hobbies include photography (mobile portrait studio), gardening, reading, baking/cooking, and other "home-makery" type things, as well as collecting perfume oils (I have over 200 right now!). I look forward to learning as much as possible from this wonderful community!

That's A LOT of animals. And, I imagine, a lot of work, too. How do the dogs and ferrets get along?

I was worried that our outdoor cats (many, many, many) would terrorize the chickens-in fact, they are terrified OF them and more or less just leave them alone. The chickens seem to do an excellent job at taking care of themselves.

Yep, is definitely is a LOT of work! The dogs and ferrets are fine with each other for the most part. The lab mix and the newest one (chihuahua mix? stray) have to be watched, simply because the big one is clumsy and doesn't know how big he really is, and the little one is still adjusting. The other two are fine with them, but I never leave them together unattended anyway. I'm really anxious to get started with the chickies, but need to make sure everything is ready for them first. Waiting until next year seems like waiting for time to end, but it's best to do things right the first time.
