Hello , I'm from Pennsylvania and just bought my first chick. It's black with white spot on her head . I believe the guy said the chick is a barred rock, or sex linker. So hoping to learn more about chickens here.
 
Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. I certainly hope its not a sex-link 'cos that white spot means its a little boy! Chickens do better in a group, as they are social animals - a few playmates would help your chick.

Thank you for the links, I'm going to check them all out. We decided to go back and buy three more. They said it was a female barred rock and she'll be producing eggs in about 6 months. We're pretty stoked to finally be able to own chickens.

Good move going back for more chicks -- chickens are flock animals and being alone is not a good option with them, so your original bird will be very grateful for you getting her (hopefully - barred rocks are "vent sexed" and that is about 90% accurate so there is always the chance of getting a male) some friends....besides, more hens means more eggs.
 
Barred rocks are hatched black and can have a white spot on the head. All of a sudden I can't remember if that indicated male or female. Sorry. You could ask at "what breed or gender is this."
