Hello from rainy New Zealand

Hello! I am a new(ish) member, been lurking for a while. I’ve finally gotten to a point where I have the room, reason, and resources to begin my new adventure into small scale chicken farming! By day I am an engineering student, I garden in my spare time to wind down, and help look after 260 something jersey cows, ergo the logical next step is a flock of my own. I’m making a coop up of recycled pallets and reclaimed wood with capacity for 6 comfortable chooks. I am also making an automatic coop door, adding a small 120mm exhaust fan and small 30W solar system, capable of running the whole coop, weather station, and garden irrigation system. The chooks will also have automatic waterers sing rain water collected off my shed roof (corrugated iron). Backyard chickens has been incredibly helpful in designing my coop and water system, and I can’t wait to step into the world of caring for chickens, eating my own eggs and using my own fertiliser on the garden.

Hello Kiwimav and welcome to BYC! :frow

This is definitely the place to be when you keep poultry! Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions about anything along the way, be sure to ask.

I found your build thread, and that's going to be neat to see!

I saw you have a lot of jersey cows. In case you hadn't seen it and may be interested, we have a sister site, Backyard Herds.

We're glad you're here!
