Personally I would never leave a dog unattended while around chickens. Dogs tend to view them as exciting, squeaky toys and play with one until it stops squeaking - then run for another.
Chickens don't survive this kind of attention.

The best attitude to hope for is uninterested, or bored with the whole chicken thing.
