Hi! We will most likely be moving to Snow Hill, MD within the next year. We are looking at living in town and to me the ordinances seem very strict. I currently have 10 Hens and a Roo so I am within the town limit at the moment. I also have pre-fab coups that will be coming with me and plan on immediately building a fenced in enclosure for them. Do you know if they are really strict about endorcing all of the rules? I read I need a yearly permit and that each bird has to be registered with the state. I just worry I'll move my babies there and then be unable to keep them.

My small family of four will be moving to a small town called Snow Hill. We will be on a 65 acre farm, but only using around 2 acres or so to begin with. We plan to raise a few types of fowl.

I am glad that you have chosen our little town. All that you say is true if you live in town limits. The worst that can happen is a fine for disturbance due to chicken noise. The fines weren't too pricey. I am not sure about the cost, but as long as your neighbors are okay there is usually not a problem.
My Grandmother lived in town and kept chickens off and on. So did a few neighbors with very ugly coops. No one had a problem with it, so it was okay. There were some people that live in closer confined areas that actually lost their chickens because of complaints.
My Grandmother's address was 435 West Market St. The other houses were on Federal, Washington and Collins streets.

Thank you for the information! I put a lot of work into my chickens so I can't imagine we would disturb neighbors too much. I do however have 4 dogs & 2 kids that will most likely be a lot noisier. Of course all of this will be put into consideration when we look at properties. Where I'm moving from now is a bit country and they don't really have any rules about chickens. It looks like a beautiful place to live and I am pretty excited.

If you live in a more rural section there is nothing to worry about. I am sure that you will love it here. After being away for 15 years I am glad to be back. Just like any rural area you must make your own fun and adventure from time to time, somethings that used to be blocks away seem so distant, but there are plenty of local events to attend throughout the year. I am certain that you and your family will enjoy it.
