Long time fan of this site, just now officially joining and becoming a member. I have found a lot of helpful information from all you wonderful chicken lovers! Thank you so much!
We just started our chicken adventure late November of last year and what an amazing experience so far! We (my hubby, my son and I) are the proud chicken keepers to a very small flock of 4. Not that I don't want to add on to our little chicken family but because of where we live and space constraints, now is just not the right time. This doesn't mean I haven't been daydreaming about adding on maybe a beautiful buff orpington or 2! We purchased 3 chicks at once back in November: 2 RIR (Ruby and Daisy) and 1 Barr Rock (Dot). A couple of weeks later while picking up feed, I saw the cutest chicks that appeared to be wearing little white snow boots on their feet. And viola! We added our 4th and final girl (for now), a beautiful light brahma who we named Dove. I never knew that chickens could have so much personality! And I never in a million years thought that I would be rocking a chicken to sleep every night before putting her in her coop. And we can't leave out the fact that I sing to her about being an eagle and soaring across the open skies!
Some of you may be wondering why on earth would I be rocking a chicken to sleep at night - much less singing to her! Here is a quick story on how this little ritual started:
About a month ago I noticed my LB - Dove, still downstairs all by her lonesome, everyone else went to bed - odd because she is usually the first to bed. She seemed to be acting strange, so I pulled her out and examined her. I thought that perhaps something was wrong with her - she just started laying eggs and things didn't look right to me in the vent area. I got worried and just sat there holding her and talking to her. Turned out that all was well but every night from that night on, she waits for me to come and get her. But if I hastily put her away - she makes a very loud fuss! She prefers for me to sing to her softly while rocking back and forth. While I am doing this she makes this purr like noise and taps her beak against my arm as she snuggles in. Last week we got home late around 11pm, she must have heard me come home because when I looked out back, she actually came out of her coop and raced towards the sliding glass door to give me an earful!
So I have now created a spoiled chicken princess and there doesn't seem to be an end to it. I really don't mind our time together at night, and the other 3 don't seem to care one way or the other if she gets the special valet treatment to the sleeping area, so as long as everyone seems to be okay with it, then I don't see a reason to stop.
I would LOVE to hear about any unusual chicken routines that you guys and gals go through! And if there is already a thread for that... sorry I overlooked it! Just point me in the right direction! Have a fantastic day and happy to meet you all!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Love your introduction! I think you might want to post in the Stories And Pictures Of My Chickens forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/39/pictures-stories-of-my-chickens about your chicken that needs a bedtime song, maybe you should be reading bedtime stories to the whole flock so the other girls don't get jealous!

Welcome to BYC!

What an adorable story here! You should post this in our Pictures and Stories of My Chickens. And it sounds like you have a very spoiled little girl there! I can completely understand. They are so sweet and adorable, you just can't help but spoil them rotten.

Enjoy your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Thanks for the welcomes, glad to meet you all! Thank you for the thread link to post and read about chicken stories.
Kelsie: Bedtime stories may be the way to go! Pretty soon I will be running out of songs to make up and this way all the other chickens won't get jealous like you said!

TwoCrows: You are correct when you said that you can't help but spoil them! Some folks may say that it is some form of a chicken addition...I like to think of it as more of a passion!
