Hello from sunny Florida

Hello Drew!

from Washington State glad you joined us!

I'll say that chicken wire is only good for keeping chickens out, and a good use for it is to keep them out of your garden. My chickens easily get into 3 1/2 feet of enclosure, so now I use chicken wire to enclose the top of my small garden.

Nearly every chicken can be noisy. The little serama hen I had was the quietest chicken I've ever owned, but to me (and me being my opinion) seramas weren't chickeny enough, so I stick to large chickens.

Use hardware cloth or something stronger for your coop.

Start with chicks. Less danger of disease, they'll get used to you, and sure, you have to wait what seems like forever to get eggs, but you'll be as proud as when your kid was born. (Okay, that's a stretch for some, but not for others... )

A cool thread for tips https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=598469&p=1

Choose
a breed or mixed breed YOU and YOUR WIFE like. Chicken people are nicer than other people, but you'll still run into those that prefer this breed, or that breed, or, especially dangerous to deal with-- the purists. I like both mixed and "pure" chickens.

Good luck, and you've def found the right site.

Hello from Tampa FLA.

Feel free to go into my profile and look at my chicken coop.......now about the quiet hens...hmmm I got a flock of 5 out of those my 2 RIR (or production reds) are sooo loud. They are very proud layers and want the world to know they are about to lay and once the deed is done. They also are very "vocal" when they want out to free range (and that is all they time the see me go out back! lol). I'm not sure about other's experience with them but mine are very vocal. My EE is not as loud, not even close, but still sings the egg song before laying. My other 2 are still not of laying age so they are very quiet for the most part...for now...

With that said none of them are any louder than the Hound that lives around the corner, ot the Pit across the St. or Yellow lab 2 houses down...well you get the picture...(and never mind my 2 dogs a Lab mix and a Shper/hound mix)....add to all that the "city noises" and really how much can a proud laying hen can bother the guy next door?
