In the Brooder
Hello All!
I am a brand new chicken mama. I adopted my first 2 chicks 3 weeks ago when they were 1 week old. 1 Cuckoo Maran and 1 Buff Orpington. I wish that I had bought at least 1 more, as I have learned that they do better with more flock members, but I didn't want to overextend our resources and end up with more eggs than we needed. I may end up getting one more for the happiness of my tiny girls.
I am married to my best friend for going on 20 years and we have 2 human girls (haha). 1 17 year old and a 7 year old.
We got our chickens because we desire to be more self-sustaining. It is a slow and steady path, but hope to be off-grid once our girls are both grown and done with school. That's another 9 years or so to get things in order and to learn as much as we can. We are starting slow, but have a small garden, some fruit trees, harvest some rain water, and now have the chickens.
I live in New Braunfels in a subdivision, so they will be backyard chickens. We converted our daughter's old wooden playhouse solid structure into what will be their coop. We have yet to set up a run for them, but have a plan and will be ready when they are transferred outside in the next few weeks or so.
While it was my 7 year old who was obsessed with getting these girls, I had wanted chickens for years and have secretly been calling them MY chickens and have been really enjoying the process of getting to know them, nurturing them, and learning all I can about them.
I have only run in to a couple of small issues. The Buff Orp had pasty butt, that was quickly remedied and she is having some issues growing. Her sister, the Maran is twice her size! I'm not sure what is going on other than genetics possibly?
As far as hobbies? I enjoy reading, yoga, health & wellness, self-care, & trying my hardest to be a great mom.
Thanks! See you in the chicken run!
