(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up with chickens my whole childhood. 3 years ago my family moved out to the "country" with 5 acres and we always wanted chickens. We finally took the plunge.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
5 chickens (2 roosters & 3 hens) that are 2 months old and we just received 6 baby chicks that were hatched Monday all female to even out the rooster/hen ratio.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Our original 5 were from a neighbor, so they are mixed breads. She said she had Buff Orpington, Jersey Giants & Cochins. We have 2 white with some black spots on the underside of their feathers, one black on and 2 buff/red ones. The 6 we just got were the rainbow pack. We got 2 RI or NH Reds or Buff Orpington, 1 white one with one black spot on her back (I think she is a Exchequer Leghorn), 3 chipmunk colored ones (I'm pretty sure one is a light brown leghorn & one is an easter egger. The 3rd I can't figure out.)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching them and seeing their own little personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I work in a library and love reading.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 2 girls in college (I had to fill my empty nest) and 4 cats and 2 dogs.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found it doing a google search on a question and decided to join to ask a question about breads.
