Hello all!
I'm a new member that has been stalking the forums for some time, just now creating my official account.
Through the past year or so, I have made mild comments about getting chickens for our 1acre yard and 4 children between us to my fiancé with little success or reaction. Recently, we came by a great, prefab, chicken coop by ZooVilla. The thing was cute enough to convince her to pull the trigger on it and now we are anxiously awaiting its arrival and assembly to get our new journey of chicken raising started!
We have settled on strictly egg layers for our flock, with a hard NO on the potential of eating them if the time comes where they are not longed for the world.
I look forward to getting to know more of you in the future as I read through the massive amount of information and candid input from you all.

Welcome to BYC - so glad you've joined us.
While the coop you have chosen is darling, it is fairly ill-designed for the advertised purpose of housing chickens (inadequate space per bird, little to no ventilation -- certainly well below what is needed, prone to overheating in the summer due to the design, made of materiel that lasts a year or two before falling apart completely, interior design that leads to various behavioral issues)....especially in the numbers they advertise them being appropriate for. This is an unfortunately common issue with those new to the hobby as they would like to believe that something sold as a chicken coop would be appropriate for housing chickens. If not too late it might be wise to cancel the order and invest the money you have spent in what will be a larger and even better suited coop for your new flock. Worst case scenario, these prefab units can be used as brooding structures, quarantine/hospital units, etc.
How many chickens are you hoping to keep? Have you started to consider breeds?
 
Thanks for that feedback. That's a bummer about the size not being what would be considered sufficient, and the quality being a concern. I'm unable to cancel the order, but we got it at a great price so worst case scenario I'm not out much, and may be able to resell it.
We haven't discussed breeds yet, we've yet to visit the local feed stores to see what they offer.
We're going to have 3, at least initially, that will have a lot of time in our fenced in yard and will not be strictly confined to the run in the prefab. I can also see myself making modifications or add-ons to make this starter setup the best it can be or building a whole new one myself.

Any suggestions for breeds that can handle the cold (even tho this year has not been) winters and hot summer days of Ohio?

You might consider using the pre-fab coop as a place to keep a sick or injured bird (things happen when we least expect it). As for breeds, generally chickens are better equipped to handle the cold better than the hot. As you have already received some good advice and links, I will just wish you all the best with your flock.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
