Panama!!!! One of the most beautiful places in the world!!! Tell me, do you have lots of wild chickens where you are? if so, have you had any luck setting up nesting boxes for hens to lay eggs?
If you want to keep a few in confinement, you may want to snatch a few new hatchlings and raise them yourself, so that they will be used to confinement from the start, and also being handled and near you. Good luck!
lol - they really do not look much different as they are mixture - but i will post some pics. the poor hen who showed up and has now hatched her little brood in our yard is probably the ugliest hen i've ever seen - she was nearly bald when she showed up and now she does have nearly all her feathers. i saw pics of the "showgirl" breed, it's funny - we call ours chicken strip as she still have a bare neck and looks more like an old stripper than a showgirl . i'll take some pics and post next weekend
that was my plan originally but since i'm only living here on a work permit, i will have to leave the island in a couple years. i don't want them to not be able to survive on their own one they are set free. my thought now is to just coop a few for a couple months and then remove the coop and hope they like the nesting boxes enough to keep laying. there are so many wild/feral chickens here on this island if everyone had a few in their yard we wouldn't have to import eggs from florida and pay so much for them. when i lived in arizona i had fresh eggs everyday - it was nice.
If you like, I will swap places with you for awhile so that you can enjoy the cool weather up here. It's quite the sacrifice, but I'm willing to do it.
