Does an invisible fence really work for the chickens? They can free range and come and go as they please with no problem. The dogs will only get shocked if they cross the invisible fence to get chickens. If they encounter chickens beyond the fence, they won't be shocked.

It's just best to be sure the dogs and chickens never meet. That means locking one or the other up securely and having them stay that way. Too many accidents are waiting to happen if they take turns using the same area.

I am a dog lover but, when the two meet it's the chickens that get killed. I've never heard of a chicken killing a dog. Maybe some future sumo chicken breed will teach dogs a lesson and both species can live in peace.

The "invisible" fence works in my case. HOWEVER, I still am very careful.

My dogs are snob dogs. They have been through several levels of obedience school and training. I joke about sending them away to college. I sent them to an advanced hunting school, where they actually lived there for nearly 5 months. It made them great at hunting commands and obedience.

That said I still can not trust them completely. One will sneak cheese off the table or counter if the chance arises. Cheese is her Kryptonite.
The other one is just a bad seed that follows orders while wearing an electronic collar.

I never let them outside without a collar on unless I am right with them. When my wife and I go for walks there are five of us, The two dogs and JJ my tom turkey. We walk around the farm. The turkey is so stupid he will get within a foot or two of the dog on our walks. When he is not " walking" with us or near us he appears to be more leery of the dogs.

The fence has so far worked, knocking on wood, but my farm is laid out in a way that gives me lots of room and makes it possible to give the dogs space away from the chickens. If however a chicken were to come into the dog area, I am afraid the chicken would either be forced to run or be a chewy. The chickens cross the fence, when we are near them but the dogs would never think of chasing them then.

The geese, also known as devil spawn, wander freely into my yard and around the buildings and into any door I leave open, the dogs have never bothered them. I have no idea why. The dogs could munch them when the geese are in the dogs free roaming area.

So I guess in closing I can say the fence is a useful tool to help keep the animals apart, but not an end all cure for dog and chicken incursions.
