Hello all,
My husband Mark and I (Paula) have a small homestead in Peyton Colorado on five acres. We have recently (in January 2022) decided to start with a small batch of chickens so we could water glass our fresh eggs. We have recently discovered what "Chicken Math" is.... We now have 47 chickens 20 of which are chicks between 4 weeks and 2 weeks. We love our birds. I would say they are pretty pampered and spoiled.
The breeds we have currently are Orpington's (buff and lavender), We have 1 Golden Wyandotte, 2 Prairie Bluebells, 2 Ameraucana's, 2 French Copper Maran's 1 is a rooster. We have some easter egger's, black star, starlight, 1 barred rock, 1 olive egger, 4 white leghorns, silkies (chicks). And one we bought as a pullet that just started crowing and we have no idea what he is. Oh and we just added 3 Ayam Cemani (2 female and 1 Roo) to our group.
We also started raising Coturnix Quail and those guys are just so fun also. We recently built them an Aviary 20 x 16. It is a wonderful addition for them. We have cameras in our aviary so we can watch them play and just live their lives to the fullest.
Our hobbies are woodworking for the hubby mostly, I do a lot of food preservation such as canning or dehydrating. I pickle the quail eggs and chicken eggs. We will be building more chicken coops as our youngest chicks get old enough, they will be in separate housing. We will be separating the French Copper Maran's, the Blue, black splash Ameraucana's, the silkies will have their own run and coop and the Ayam Cemani will also go in their own coop with run. ( I am thinking of making them an aviary also since they are not as cold tolerant as some breeds.
I love BYC and always find myself coming here when I have the multitude of questions I need help answering. I will be posting a picture soon of my mystery rooster to see if any of you can help me identify what breed he is.
