hello i am a fairly new chicken owner, been doing it about six months now. I still dont have any eggs, and i think i need to get rid of my rooster because he is quite loud in the morning and my neighbors dont like it. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good home he could go to, he is a speckled sussex and quite beautiful and mild mannered. I also wanted to know if anyone had any ideas to get my chickens laying.... they get organic chicken feed, have access to calcium and grit but they dont free range they have a six foot by nine foot pen because my yard isnt fully fenced in. I got them in july and everyone who sold them to me said that they would be laying in "A couple weeks" well its the end of october and still not a single egg.... my husband is contemplating getting rid of them at this point saying they are too much work because they dont lay....
i also heard of a place in new hampshire that sells layers? does anyone know where in new hampshire?!

Yeah, rehoming rooster can be a challenge. How old are the hens? Maybe you can post pictures.

from the Finger Lakes of New York! Glad you joined us. We are well into the time when the lack of daylight can significantly impact egg laying. I have lamps in my two coops. They are on a timer and run from 6 AM to 8 PM. This could be the issue, but it is hard to tell, as many factors will impact their laying. I, too, would wonder about their age if they have not started yet.

Welcome to BYC. We have Marans and they took forever to start laying. We have rehomed roosters through Craigs List. Welcome and good luck. Like dadsdeercamp said, they wont lay till their ready. Hang in there.
