Hello! I've been lurking here for several months and decided to introduce myself. I'm Janelle and currently live in Texas with my husband, two kids, 4 hens and old lady pug.

We got our first hen in May. Our landlord/ neighbor has chickens running wild everywhere and often they hide away and hatch chicks. One particular chick was very sickly and almost died, so we were asked to take her. She's a tiny little thing, less than a pound at 7 months. From what I can tell she's half Belgian d'Uccle and half Oeg bantam/ barnyard mix.

She got better, and, well, she couldn't be lonely so we found 3 silkie hens to keep her company. I'm totally obsessed with d'Uccles and Silkies. 2 of our silkies are broody...

I'm vegan, but family, friends, the hens and our dog enjoy the eggs when we have them. Eventually I want to open a poultry shelter and rescue ex battery hens, retired laying hens, and unwanted roos.
