Hello from Upstate NY!

Glad to see other New Yorkers, too!

Those of you in NY or other cold areas, what coops do you have and do you heat them?

Thanks!

I have a 8x8 coop insulated, house wrapped, sided, and using 2 heat lamps at night right now.... :)

I am new. Chicks are 2 weeks old and the coop is not quite ready for prime time. Winter here between Buffalo and Rochester get wicked but I haven't given any thought yet to insulation or heating. I still need doors! Lol

Looks like we'll learn together! Best of luck to you! How many do you have? Yes, the area does get cold! I am about four hours southeast of you and it's rough enough! :)

Not everyone does insulate or put in heating in really cold climates, right? I am reading conflicting info.

Definitely a new learning curve in my life!

Mature chickens tolerate cold much better than heat. Some believe it is best not to heat the coop - if the power goes out the birds will suffer because they got acclimated to a heated coop. Then too the temperature difference between heated coop and outside can affect them.

Welcome from Saratoga! Have never used a heat lamp on any of my adult chickens during the winter and have never lost any of them. I even have bantams and leghorns. :)

I'll have 15 if my order ever comes in. I have 2 little "boys" right now. We are still waiting for 13 little "girls".

I do plan to insulate before Halloween but I figure they'll be fine til then. I'm conflicted about it though. Often, if I put something off til later, I have another excuse later, and it never gets done

We keep some in the barn. Most of our chickens ducks and geese go into a sideshoot off our barn, it used to be the old manure house , but they free range during the day for most days though we close them in the manure house at night.

Hello and welcome to BYC from a fellow NY-er! I am working through my first year of chicken keeping myself, 'learning as I go' just like you. I have found BYC to be a great source of information, ideas, and camaraderie.

As far as heat, I have chosen to not heat my coop. I have a basic 4X8 frame covered in T1 11 siding, my roof is shingled plywood, I have no insulation, and loads of ventilation. So far so good, I have not had any issues whatsoever with the cold affecting my birds. Mine are all considered cold hardy birds.

Best of luck to you!

The cold hardiness of a bird is the key to it being suitable for upstate ny. We live about an hour north of watertown so it gets very cold up here. Also I didn't add to my last post that our barn is not heated.
