Hello From Utah! Egg Laying Question here!

Hey found ya! This is Whittni. Welcome to BYC. If you feed a chicken cat food, which people will do when they molt, its usually given in a separate dish.

Hi all!
We're in Southern Utah, and are new to chicken raising. I got the chicken coop up, we have aquired our flock, and have been patiently waiting for eggs.... to no avail.

[waves] I'm new to chickens and in the St George area. Nice to meet you! We got our six babies in March, and they started laying about two months ago, one by one.

Norhing but happy, healthy looking chickens running around. This is why its such a mystery- by all accounts we should be over-run with eggs by now!
Ill try the cat food approach too. How often should I add it to the feed?

it is a one time thing. you can add it to their feed or just toss a handful in the coop and let them get it like a scratch treat.
What will normally happen is about two days later you'll start picking up in your egg count. and after a period of about 5 or 6 days. your egg count should be up. IF it picks up then dies back down after the 5 days we have to figure out what your missing. and another handful can be tossed out while we work on their diet. Usually what they are missing is table scraps. Say your sorry to the dogs and the cats and toss the table scraps to the birds in that case. and re-evaluate your feed.
I use it to judge the protein in the birds. and some birds you have to give a real boost too to get an egg out of them. I think some birds have a " nature judge " installed in them from God. If times are good and there are plenty of bugs and worms and stuff ( and they don't have worms themselves which can hamper egg production as well ) then they lay. When times are bad, decent or not overwhelming good they won't try to reproduce.
( don't be alarmed if dark specks appear in the shells of the eggs. it was caused by the cat food super boost in the eggplant. they will go away )

Some breeds just take longer to lay. I have a chicken that I hatched on 2/6, and she didn't start laying til this week, so she was around 8 months old.

Pictures would be really helpful on breeds, plus we could be checking to see how red their combs are.

Hi! Thanks for your help earlier! Nope, they are STILL not laying! We did aquire someone elses flock, and those ones ARE laying, so at least we have some eggs now. It's like Easter everyday!
I don't know why the Banty's don't lay. I decided they may just be too immature.
They get until next spring.... then they go back on Craigslist....
