Good morning everyone. I am Nichole and we just moved back to AZ. My husband and I are going to start with some chicks from where he works. Looking very forward to having some chicks to add to our small farm.

We currently have a miniature horse, 2 large dogs and an indoor cat. We will be adding a nubian goat in the summer. We have 2 small children, 4 and 2 and I think that is it. Lol

Any advice or guidance would be wonderful since we have never had chickens before but def want fresh eggs and something to show our kids howto be responsible for animals from start to finish.

So glad you could join our community! Have you decided on the breeds yet? Lots of friendly, docile breeds out there that also make great meat birds as well as excellent in the laying department. The Orpingtons fall right into this category.

I stayed up last night reading a lot. My husband want Ameraucanas, I want Cuckoo Marans and dh also wants some Buckeyes. His store is getting all these breeds this week. We were thinking 2 of each, pullets, and going from there. Is this a good idea or is mixing breeds not that good?
 
We do have a full house but since I stay at home it makes the juggling easier. Plus giving the kids responsibilities and teaching them about animals and all the outdoors have to offer is I thinkthe best thing.

We picked these breeds from the lists because they are average egg layers. We are trying to get Baydream Farms offthe drawing board and into reality.
 
Hello :frow And Welcome To BYC! Sounds like a nice mix of breeds, generally chickens that are raised together will get along with each other, especially if they are of the same general type, mixed flocks are a lot of fun, and the colorful egg baskets a real plus.

Here are the first 2 chicks we have picked out.the other breeds come in on Fri. These guys are EE's. I'm super excited to get these guys home Fri!
