Hello From Virginia

no, thin shells will be the first problem - bone loss will happen if it keeps going.

if they are getting green grass at the moment, thats plenty of calcium for now. its when they dont have access to grass, due to caging conditions, or weather that it starts becoming an issue for *most* of us.

my farm is a bit more commercial than most, i have to add green leafy items to my feed; and supply calcium. its not something that i would recommend to others, natural (as far as feed goes) is *normally* better.

Mine will be caged, and the area designated for them is mostly mud. I threw in some hay over the mud/ dirt . They won't have access to any greens naturally. Summer they will have access to wild blackberries and honeysuckle that grows through their fencing, but that is about it.

Thank You, Kelsie2290 ! I hope I haven't missed saying thanks to anyone who has welcomed me. Chickens aren't the only thing I'm new at! being on a message board is another one so I apologize in advance for missing anyone !

I supply oyster shell to mine if I find a softy egg. Most of the time they just ignore the oyster shell anyways. Now my girls do get out every couple of days, I rotate pens so I can keep the breeds separated. But like I said in an earlier post it is not absolutely necessary, you can provide it as a supplement if you want. :old I know a lot of old timers who never buy it.
