Hello from Virginia!

Hello fellow Virginians. My husband and I got 4 chicks a few days ago and I am already wanting more. We had ducks a few years ago and two of them still return to our house every year. This is our first time having our own chicks and we are excited to raise chickens.

Wow, thanks so much everyone! :) We do not have our girls yet. We plan on getting golden comets, buff orps, and/or easter eggers as pullets b/c we want eggs asap :D. Our kids want Silkies for pets, so we plan on hatching those or buying them as day olds at some point. I'll post pics of the coop construction as it progresses. So excited!! Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Golden comets will start laying quick...before 20 weeks. Easter Eggers take longer. Mine are now 24 weeks and not yet laying. One has started doing the squat as a prelude to laying, though. (It is the position hens take for mating: squatting on the ground with the body flattened. If you grasp her on the back she will rock forward and lift her tail up.) My Gold Comets started doing that about a week and a half before beginning to lay. It is a good sign for being time to put a decoy egg into a nest box. ;)

We did it!! Got our chickens yesterday

We finished the coop just in time to bring home our 8 pullets and 1 cockerel. 2 RIR/Red Sex LInk pullets, 3 RIR/EE pullets, 1 Red Silver Laced Wyandotte pullet, 2 lavender Silkie pullets and one Frizzled Silkie Cockerel .

Wow!! Love your pics, that's a lovely mixed flock you have there. I especially like your frizzle :love I love frizzle chickens.

Congrats on them :celebrate Good luck in the future.
