Hello from VT everybody. Great forum!

We used to have 6 chickens that were about 2 years old last spring. Over the summer they slowly got picked off by a fishercat and I think also a goshawk. We have one of the originals remaining. Of course we got so used to owning chickens that we decided to get more, created a run for the new chicks, and became more vigilent about letting them out on their own. We ordered 12 and just found out that two of them are roosters (noisy). Percentage wise I had hoped for better numbers favoring the hens, but alas, two roosters it is. We don't have any interest in hatching new chicks. And from time to time we like to give away our eggs when the supply exceeds our demands. So right off the bat I have 2 questions: 1) Will the roosters mess up the eggs? 2)should I just 'get rid of them'? I really don't want them to cause trouble and with kids around I worry they may become aggressive down the road. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for a great forum and lots of wonderful info!

Welcome! Some roosters are not aggressive. Some are not loud. Feel it out and see.
I am going to let some hatch eventually, and I figure I need to have a rooster outlet myself. Good luck to you on what ever you decide to do with them.

Wow that was quick! So the eggs won't be tainted once they start to ... you know. I know this sounds like a really dumb question, and I apologize in advance.

umm... you mean 'fertilize' when you mean mess up the eggs, or do you mean that they will get in the nest boxes and mess with the eggs?
Fertile eggs are but one cell different than non fertile eggs. Collect them everyday and they will not begin to develop. Occasionally even in non fertile eggs you will see a meat spot or a blood spot from the ovary / follicle letting lose of the ovum. It isn't anything to worry about.
As far as a rooster messing with eggs, mine doesn't seem to care about them in the least.

Some one else will have a clearer answer to your questions. I just don't mind a lot of things when it comes to food. As long as it is fresh and healthy, I don't do the squeamish bit much. Just don't ask me to eat liver.

Thanks for the great replies. Well, I suppose I'll hang onto those roosters then, until we see how their personality evolves.
