(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am absolutely new to chickens! I've never had them before but within the last year my husband and I (with our kiddos) moved onto 30 acres. I ordered my first batch of hatching eggs in March. Unfortunately only 3 hatched (only 1 hatched alone, I had to assist the other 2 and they are doing very well).
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Due to the disappointing hatch we went and picked up 6 more chicks from local farm stores. We have 9 total chicks at this time.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I currently have 3 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, and 4 Australorps. Though I'll be posting elsewhere a photo of one of the Australorps to get a more positive ID as I think it may be a Barred Rock.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Lots and lots of research over the last few weeks led me to BackYardChickens! I've found so much helpful information and felt really prepared when my chicks did get to hatch day. I was even able to assist my one Rhode Island Red that hatched with curled feet and it's doing super well and sprinting around with perfectly straight little toes.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I really enjoy video games and reading. I like to bake and cook when I have the time and really enjoy experimenting with new recipes!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a husband and 2 kids (a 3 year old son and an almost 6 month old daughter). My son is extremely excited about the chicks. We also have 2 sweetheart pitbull rescues and 2 friendly barn cats. I'm a stay at home mom. We plan to free range our chickens in our front yard but there is a ton of forest for them to forage in as well.
I'm excited to be here!
