Well, I am about as city as city gets but really want to country-fy myself and I'd like to start out with some chickens. I don't know why chickens but seems like a good place to get a start.

My questions are many and not sure where best to ask them just yet but I'll figure it out. My questions range from "how to keep snakes out" to "is there such thing as a rooster that doesn't make all that racket that will annoy the neighbors?"

Anyways....look forward to it!

Just ask and everyone will direct you to what you need and you can also use the search function to find what you want, this is the only place you need for experience and direction, welcome to the board and be carefull!!! There are people on here that might make you a chicken addict and before you know it, you'll have 5 incubators and buying everything off of craigslist to build more coops and brooders. Save yourself before its too late, set your limit now before the enablers get you!!! LOL!!

I think you are headed in the right direction. You found BYC! Roosters arn't good to neighbors, but you don't need one anyway. We have 6 hens and more eggs then my family of 5 can eat. Dogs seem to be the biggest problem for newbies. Most snakes are beneficial by eating rodents. Chickens are great!
