Sadly, Canadian Geese have become an invasive species in many countries. On top of that, CG are extremely strong and if threatened can break bones and are usually quite aggressive. They don't normally go off of the personal history of one bird, just the normal behavior for the species. Imprinting also can mean that the bird does not behave in a predetermined manner, and it can be harder to figure out how the bird will respond to different situations - if they're imprinted on one specific person at a time for example, then anyone else trying to handle the bird might be putting themselves at risk. I can see why it would be easiest to euthanize, although I hope something works out otherwise.Welcome to BYC. I want to wish you the best of luck. I cannot imagine that someone (s) wants to euthanize Hazle just because she can't be released. I hope the links provided by @theoldchick will help you save her.
I'm sure a zoo would take her. If not I keep Canada geese and I know a few other aviaries that do too that might be interested. I'd take her but I'm in SD and CA is pretty far away. Is your organization ok with giving her away? Paperwork would probably be necessary.Hello. I am a volunteer at a wildlife rescue animal hospital in Southern California, and we received an imprinted female Canada Goose. Her name is Hazel, and she cannot be released back into the wild. Which means she might be euthanized.
Everyday that I am at the center, I feed and spend a little quality time with her. Probably not the best thing for me to do, but she's a very gentle and special animal. So how can I not? Especially considering that she's already been imprinted, and we don't get the luxury of getting to know our patients. It's a unique situation to work with domesticated wildlife.
But back to the dilemma regarding euthanasia. The reason for my being here is to help save Hazel's life. Even though she can't be released into the wild, we can try to find a placement for her at a zoo or other wildlife center that can utilize her for educational purposes.
Any ideas?
