I am new to owning chickens. I just got my chicks last Saturday, and I already have fallen in love with them.
I have 6 black Australorp chicks all supposed to be pullets, but I think I might have a roo or two!
I think chickens are great birds with their own little personalities. I also love the idea of getting fresh eggs and knowing where they came from.
Along with chicken's, I enjoy vegetable and flower gardening. I have a two acre lot so I am able to grow a good amount of food. The chickens will be a great addition with their eggs.
I share this amazing experience with my two kids and husband. We all work together and its a great way to spend our days together. We also have two Guinea pigs and two Chinchillas.
I am grateful to have found BYC because on Monday because one of our little Australorp's was putting her head between her legs and running backwards. I was alarmed and immediately started searching for what it could be. The first place that popped up was BYC. Here I found some great info that gave me insight on what was wrong and how to treat her. On top of that, I was so happy to see the support everyone had for each other and how they shared stories of thier own experiences.
Seeing this, I decided if I'm going to own chicken's, I definitely want to be a part of such a supportive and informative community.:love

What makes you think you might have some cockerels? If you got them from a hatchery or feed store they should be 90% accurate. Maybe you could post some pics to get more opinions, but they are probably too young to tell for sure anyway. Early comb and wattle development isn't always that reliable, and male feathers won't start growing in until about 12 weeks.
Good luck in your new chicken adventure!
