Hello everyone!
I was meant to post this last Saturday when I joined but never got around to it. I thought it'd be pretty fun to fill out now so people get an idea of the kind of birds I own and so I can meet new people!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had chickens for around 1 year now at our home but I'm not relatively new to them as I've been around them before that.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Hm, well that generally changes quite often as some chickens come to us every few weeks then some leave us too. However, if I'm also including my ducks and quail, it roughly stays around the 35 number!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Likewise, this also changes often but currently we have:

Likewise, this also changes often but currently we have:
- Blue Brahma
- Bovan Goldline's
- Belgium Bantams
- Silkies
- Light Sussex
- Indian Runner Ducks
- Mandarin Ducks
- Coturnix Quail
- Golden Pheasant
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
All our flock of chickens is family shared except my Silkies and Quail. So of course it's got to be those!
I'm beginning the task of breeding my show Silkies to try and better their traits. However, it's mainly just for fun rather than a huge scale breeding program. My two little Quails are like an old married couple so I love just sitting watching them, they're so entertaining! Oh and the eggs are lovely too, particularly the Indian Runner eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a hobbyist photographer that focuses on pets, animals and wildlife. You'll most likely see some of my photos around on here! My photos are not allowed to be used at all unless I have given direct permission though.
I also occasionally enjoy art, again involving animals!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I think the most relevant part of this question to answer is what other pets I own so here we go!
- Indian Ringnecks
- Rosellas
- Dogs
- Mice
- Pygmy Goats
I have also owned many other pets which have sadly either passed on or we have found new homes for such as:
- African Grey
- Canaries and Finches
- Modern Game Hens
- Ferrets
- Rats
- Horses
- Peafowl
- Veiled Chameleon (best pet I ever owned miss him so much since he passed on)
- Tarantulas
- Snakes
- Pygmy Hedgehog
- Hamsters (just evil...)
- Fish
I've pretty much always had a love for animals! After I left school I went on to study animal care and management as well as animal sciences. I tended to prefer working with the livestock as it always seemed more rewarding. However, A level chemistry was a pain...
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this community after it kept popping up whenever I searched about my chickens! I recently had a few questions of my own so thought I'd join.
Here's just a few photos of some of my current birds:
