Hi Everyone! If you told me a month ago I would even be asking this question, I would think you had lost your mind. . however, as fate would have it, my husband and I fell into a gorgeous gated community with 9 1/2 acres ` sheep and a tractor come with the house :) I would also love to have chickens and I realize the cage would have to be a box ~ my husband grew up on a small farm so he has an idea of what it would take, but I'm clueless. . I am ordering the book asap just to think about it. I am a little nervous because Kit Foxes are protected on the land ~ any suggestions? Can they roam the yard during the day and be put away at night? Susan from Tres Pinos, CA.

! Pleased to have you with us! Sounds like you have a little homework to do. Take a tour of the Learning Center link below - it will get you up to speed quickly. You can make a pretty predator safe coop and run - if the foxes are protected that might be your only option. Feel free to post whatever questions you have in the various forums on BYC - there are lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks here to help you! Good luck to you!

:welcome and good luck with your poultry adventure! :frow I would invest in hardware cloth, for your run. Monitored free range would make your chickens happy but be warned, very close supervision is a must when there's foxes around. There's lots of forums here on these topics and lots of supporting people to assist where they can. :)

fox can dig, jump and climb, so your coop and run area need to be Fort Knox, from ground up to covered run. Are you allowed to use electric fencing around the chickens?

It would not kill a predator but, might change his mind about wanting to munch on chickens.

A little strip of bacon on the electric fence never hurt any body right? Lol
