Hi all, Just joined and will be picking up my girls (buff and lace wyndottes) in 2 weeks time and I cant wait!!

Im planning on feeding them as grain free as I possibly can. Anyone that feeds theirs the same way I would love to hear your do's and dont's!
Ive kept chickens before but only played around really. This time I have more time to devote to them and keep them in tip top condition and in return have regualr and wonderfully healthy eggs! :)

Welcome to BYC. My flock isn't grain free, but they do prefer to graze the yard and eat barley fodder, instead of feeding out of the feeder. They seem to decide for themselves how much of each to consume.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Chickens are grain eaters by nature. Many grains are used for protein in chicken feed, so you will need to use animal products for protein if you don't use grains.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Thank you for the welcome!
Sunflower seeds are high in protein, as is liver and various meats. I also have a good supplier of dried mealworms at a sensible price so I dont think they will go short on that count. :)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. In addition to protein, be sure and provide plenty of calcium for your girls when they reach laying age. I would suggest keeping a pan of crushed oyster shells available for them at that time. They will eat from the oyster shells when they need more calcium. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your girls.
