Hi Chicken lovers! I'm Leslie from PA and I'm new to BYCs. I've always wanted chickens and when our small town passed small flock zoning i was THRILLED! We can own up to 6 hens, but as of right now I have only two that i rescued from a neighbor that lost interest. They started with 6 but let them wander (which is not allowed in our town) and I think a few were either killed by cars or taken by dog/hawks/foxes. UGH!! I had to intervene and offered to take last two. Poor things were coming up to my yard for months. Their yard was nothing but gravel and dog waste. I have a very basic makeshift coop for them and am in the process of building a proper one and will be getting more chicks as soon as possible. I look forward to meeting other Chicken lovers and learning from you all. Meet Martha and Henrietta. Martha is bosslady :)

I'm new to site, my little girls arrive may 18th. My husband has the hen house done, although they will be in a brood er in the house for a few weeks. I take care of dairy cattle, and I can't believe how nervous I'm for those little birds to arrive.

Hi and
welcome-byc.gif
- glad that you have joined us.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre
https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads. The Coop section and "Coops and Runs" forum should provide plenty of ideas for your coop build.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread

All the best

Hi Again! Thanks for the warm welcome. I've been scrolling thru and looking over all the small coop designs. based on the materials I have access to and my skills :) I'm going to try my hand at this design but adding a pitched roof. I have a question.... How important is a roosting bar for chicken happiness?

Thanks!
