Hello! Longtime follower, new to posting…

Hello from southeastern USA. :)

We’ve had chickens for a little over a year (2 RIRs - including a surprise roo - and 2 Cinnamon Queens from TSC) and will be adding our 6 new chicks to the existing flock this summer. Our newbies are one of each: 6wk Black Australorp, 5wk Cream Legbar, 5wk Cuckoo Maran, 4wk Plymouth Blue Rock, 4wk Blue Copper Maran, and 3wk Splash Laced Red Wyandotte. We ordered them all (except the Aussie who was an impulse buy) to be delivered to a local farm same day, but the hatcheries had issues fulfilling orders on time so that’s why there are such age gaps). The Australorp seems a bit high strung and the Legbar is extremely needy and small compared to her sisters. Pics of our newbies attached. Hopefully, all are pullets. The only for sure pullet is the Legbar. The Cuckoo seems to be staying black instead of greying so I feel confident she is a pullet. The Aussie is on roo watch because she’s been quite a bit bigger than the rest for the past few weeks and “her” personality is fairly roo-like. The BCM is large, but nothing else indicates roo. I know it’s still too soon to tell for some of them, but any input is appreciated. They’ll be going into a mobile coop soon for a couple weeks and then will be in a temporary run next to the big girls for a couple weeks before moving into the big run for integrating. We’re shooting for the baby to be at least 8wks first and Praying for no issues!
Welcome to BYC!!

Glad to meet you, and welcome to BYC. You may want to post some new photos to the forum What Breed/What Gender when they get to be older. Here is a very helpful web post about telling the gender of chickens. But keep in mind that even pros make mistakes and that bird you confidently expect to be F or M may end up the opposite, so don't make hasty judgements.

If you have roosters that you can't or don't want to keep (or slaughter), you should plan to post an ad
1. Your local Craigslist
2. Your local Facebook poultry interest group (if you have one)
3. Here on BYC,
a. in your state thread and
b. in the rehoming forum.

In all cases, you will have better success if you include in the ad:
* A glamor shot of the rooster
* His age, breed, and where you got him
* His temperament - is he good with people and children? Is he good with other chickens?
* Why you are having to get rid of him.

Best wishes, and fingers crossed for pullets! :fl

Here is an article about introducing young chickens to your existing flock.

To look for articles on your own:

A. Use the SEARCH button, but use the Advanced Search choice, and select ARTICLES at the top of the box. Just enter your keyword(s) and scroll through your results!

B. I find it helpful to notice the rating and reviews. All articles are by BYC members, and all the reviews/ratings are as well. The ratings help a newbie like me sort the most useful and reliable articles.

C. You can bookmark the articles or posts you think you want to refer to again using that bookmark icon at the top of articles or posts. You can find them again by clicking on your own avatar and looking at the list of bookmarks you have built up!

Hi and welcome! I had 2 cuckoo Marans in my flock back when I lived in Maryland…they were super friendly as pullets and became a bit more flighty after they started laying at around 20 weeks. Although they did quickly rise to the top of the pecking order, (one even had to wear bully blinders for a day for pecking my bantams incessant) and either one or the other was always broody…they laid the most beautiful chocolate brown eggs and made the most lovely, flute-like clucking noise that is supposedly exclusive to Marans. We had to rehome all of our birds when we moved to Florida, and the nice people who adopted them said that our Maran named Sparkles actually beat up their rooster😳🤣
I do miss those girls…
