Hi all, this is my first time at hatching chicks,
not been the most successful we had 4 go rotten
1 died before managing to hatch.
we did manage 2 they are so beautiful, not sure what they are we got them from a farm who just lets them free range it was a bit of a project for my 2 sons.
My worry is that one has a bald bulge underneath it, when he/she was hatched it was huge! I've kept putting Vaseline on it and massaging it in (under protest from chick) it appears to be shrinking is it something to worry about or will it just retract as the chick strengthens??? Advice please!

Sorry to hear the hatch wasn't better, but congrats on the ones that did make it! The bulge you're describing sounds like it may be around the chick's belly? That would be where it absorbed the yolk just before hatching. This sometimes does make a bit of a bulge that is quite notable. If the "navel" area is sealed, clean and o.k.-looking and the chick eats and poops o.k. I wouldn't worry.
