I wouldn't feel any guilt over wing-clipping. Done the right way, it is a hair cut that will grow back and doesn't hurt the bird at all.

As for your grass, I think it depends on how many birds and what kind of grass. We never had problems, but we have bermuda grass, we can rototill it in and not kill it.
