hi! I am totally going into this for the first time! I have wanted chickens since we bought our house in the country 5 years ago, and it’s finally happening in a little over a week! Coop is almost done, baby novogens ordered and 2 adult Rhode Island reds, (along with an unknown breed)from a friend. Working on the brooder for the chicks, but have all the supplies purchased and I think we’ll be good to go. I attached a photo of the adults, wondering if you can name the breed of the white hen. I know in the pic there are two, but one met her fate at my friends river . I’m excited to be here and I’m sure I’ll have tons of questions as I go!

Greetings and welcome to BYC Barb! So glad you joined us. Congrats on finally getting started! I recall the excitement you must be feeling :) There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Hello and welcome to BYC! So glad your dream of having chickens finally came true, they really are interesting and fun to keep.

To help with your breed question, I believe the hen in between the two Rhode Island reds is a blue laced red wyandotte. They're a relatively new color of wyandotte to my knowledge. I've never had one, but other wyandottes I've had in the past have been very friendly and a wonderful breed to keep.

Good luck with your new chickens and let us know if you have any other questions; there are tons of people who will be willing to answer them. Oh, and if you have the time I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see some pictures of your new chicks when they get to you!

:welcome:celebrate

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)
