Hello :) new to this forum.

That is indeed our daughter. She was a micropreemie born at 27 weeks and weighed 2 pounds. She will be 4 in december. We homeschooling/unschooling her to allow her to chase what she desires. Today we lost 3 girls to our neighbor's dog. 2 are severely injured and another is pretty beat up. We had 12 starting the day out...now down to 9 and possible down to 6 or 7 by the morning. I'm really torn up about it. That's how I found you guys. I noticed not many talk about what happens when they die....unfortunately the dog bites make them inedible. Such a sad waste. They will be buried tomorrow....hopefully the others last through the night and I will be cleaning their wounds and separating the injured in the morning.

The injured 3 are still alive this morning :) what can I do to help their wounds?

Puncture wounds like those from dog bites are nasty and can easily become infected, so you need to make sure they're clean. Flush them out with saline solution and then pack them with neosporin. If there are feathers around the wound you may need to trim them back to help keep the wounds clean.

Chickens are highly resilient, so they will probably be okay as long as they don't get infected ;) Keeping the wounds clean is the most important thing at this stage.

Also, if you think they might be in shock, they need to be kept in a warm, dark place to recover.

For pain, you can dissolve five 5-grain aspirin into a gallon of water for them. That will also help with any inflammation.

G’Day from down under Mrs.Eppler :frow Welcome!

Reading on …. I am so sorry to hear of your recent losses :( I wish you and your injured girls all the best.

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share more pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
