Hello All! I'm Valerie, mother of two little ones (2 year old and 10 month old) and 3 new chicks. Two Americanas, one Rhode Island Red. We're hoping to increase our flock in the next few days. I've been doing a lot of research on breeds and local farmers selling chickens. Really considering a Buff Orpington, Golden Laced Wynadotte, and possibly a Silkie.

I'm so glad I came across this forum. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and gathering all sorts of information. Thought it was time I jumped on board and introduced myself.

We just ordered our coop and now we're just waiting for it to be shipped to us for assembly. We'll be building our own run. Wish us luck! My husband is not much of a handy man

I look forward to seeing you all around on the forum!

I love buffs! Golden retriever of chickens. Not sure about mixing the silkie with the rest of your standard sized hens... but some may disagree!

from East Tennessee!!

The silkie will probably do fine if she grows up with everyone else. Banties have a giant personality in those little bodies.

Where are you located? DH says I should rehome a couple of my Silkie chicks....

Yeah, I'm still not sure about getting the silkie... a friend of mine was telling me how awesome they were with her little girl.

I wish I knew about Buffs before getting two Americanas. I probably would have only got one Americana and three Buffs

Good to know! We're in Lebanon. Wilson county. I know I've heard of your county, but I'm still pretty new to TN so not exactly sure where that is...?

We're between Knoxville and the Smoky Mtns, so probably too far away.

You'll enjoy Americaunas. We started with 2 silkies, 2 BO, and 2 Americaunas. Each breed had distinctly different personalities! The Americaunas made me laugh the most. They are very smart birds!

Buffs are great, so are Americanas. Both are good laying hens. I've got silkies and they roost with the big girs with no problems. Silkies are sweet birds, and they can hold their own. One of my silkies chased away the neighbor's dog and the dog ain't no yorkie! Poor Pyzon is afraid of my chickens now! Good Luck!
