(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

My family had chickens for years before they had me. So actually, for me, the chickens came first.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Five. But the city says it's three.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Four are Cuckoo Marans. One is what I think is a Sapphire Gem splash.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

They are very entertaining, but they are more valuable to me as egg machines.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I like to read. And I garden a bit. Playing around with our beagle and the little rat terrier.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I work at home. Hoping to make it to retirement in a very few years. My husband is on leave, so that's given him time to modify a mid-range TSC coop to beef it up and make it sturdier. I'm lucky for that. He's never had chickens. It's really fun watching those little "feathered dinosaurs" charm him so completely. They're brooding in our hall bathtub for now, and both the beagle and the rat terrier have come to think of them as "their" babies. And lord, who knew getting a handful of chicks would be such a struggle?! Wow! Really lucked out that a farm store 25 miles from me had these 5 birds, feathered but not yet pullets, for a good price. So far they are healthy curious girls, but we're all ready to move them into the coop in the next day or two.....storms coming to North Texas tonight. Good test for the coop.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found the group on Facebook. I've been lurking for a long time. Now that I've joined the online community, I might start making posts of my girls too. I'm really excited about being a chicken keeper again....finally!

Welcome Here! I have a rat terrier too! And a jack Russell and a Husky! And 44 chickens! Good to have you here! :hugs
