Hello - non-bird owner

Hi:

I found this site helping a friend with her flock of 18 hens and three roosters. I really would love a flock of three to five hens of my own. I just love the look of Buff Orpingtons, especially when they run. The problem is that I live in Gatineau Quebec and I don't meet the city's requirement for the pilot on backyard chickens.

I was thinking of building something stealthy. My immediate neighbours are between indifferent to and positively interested in the chickens, but I wouldn't want to risk birds' safety for a few eggs and a little entertainment. For the meantime, I see the friend's birds on weekend and I'll learn a little bit here in the process.

I am glad you so interested in chickens it is almost near impossible to keep them on the qt little darling like to sing when they lay an egg kinda look what I did... Welcome here to Backyard Chickens learn all you can may you will move from Gatinuea proper eventually and have your own birds

I appreciate you enjoying chickens, but until you can live some place where you can meet your city's requirements, I'd recommend you hold off on getting your own. It's easy to get attached to birds (just like any other pet) and if you had to get rid of them, that would be hard. Not to mention, it may be costly (I don't know your city's fines). It's also stressful to the chickens to be moved to a new location so there is the chicken's welfare to consider.

All that is just my 2 cents worth of course.

Don't worry. I'm not going to be an avian outlaw for the reasons mentioned above. I'm more of a chicken aunt than chicken mom at this point. I bring a friend's chickens stale homemade bread and other leftovers on weekends, and occasionally build things for them, like new nesting boxes last weekend. My beagle likes to lay hang around the birds. It's cute to watch him with the hens. It's strange how he's gentle with animals smaller than him considering that he was bred to chase them.

Also, I'm not willing to give up my house until I'm done working in a dozen years or so. I have a short commute and the place is nearly paid for. The only thing left is to patiently hope/wait for the backyard poultry pilot to become a less restrictive by-law.
