Welcome to BackYard Chickens! Thanks for joining!

It's possible that the dog would enjoy playing, but the chicken, no. nuh-uh. no way. :D

But another dog? Yes! The world needs more happy dogs. :celebrate

Your chickens will most likely stay if they learn that the coop is their home.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frowGlad you joined.
Someone is pulling your leg. Chickens make good companions to other chickens, not dogs.
Dogs and chickens can get along, but they cannot live together.
Dogs enjoy the companionship of other dogs as well as their humans.
No, the chickens will not run away as long as you provide them with water, food and proper shelter.

My dogs and chickens "tolerate" each other. One of them wouldn't hurt another living creature if her life depended on it... the other would gladly chase my chickens to death (or worse) if I hadn't spent time training her to ignore them. They all happily coexist, but I wouldn't call them buddies or playmates. I've seen a few instances where a lone chicken befriended a dog or cat and they'd snuggle together for warmth or possibly companionship, but that's not very common.

If you lock your chickens inside the coop for several days to a week, they become "homed" to that site... so when you do let them out to free range, they always come home to roost. Unless the conditions of their home are terrible, (or maybe an agressive rooster or top hen will run a few off) chickens are far less likely to run away than get taken by daytime predators like hawks or foxes. Anyone who free ranges is usually prepared for some losses, that's why many folks keep their chickens fenced in a secure run. And a locked coop at night to protect from many other nocturnal predators.

Are you thinking about getting chickens again?

Hello from down under Australia and welcome to BYC!
My dog would hang out with the chickens and love them but then go off and do his own thing. Id probably get another dog but Chickens are amazing and fun to own so id also be thinking about that too.
You are going to love it here.
