    Hi
My family and I are in love with our chickens; Layla, Roxie, Dixie, Penny, and Rose, hatched July 4th. They have provided us with so much joy and so many learning opportunities. Current bylaws restrictions in our community are forcing us to get rid of our girls, specifically a rule that coops must be 50' from any dwelling. Please help us fight this. We need to come up with reasons why this 50' rule is not necessary and that a closer distance should be allowed. I will post in another forum for your responses. Thank you in advance, our family will be forever grateful for your help.
    Jody

Greetings from Kansas, Jody, and :welcome! Pleased you joined our community but sorry you find yourself in this predicament. :(. I think the first place you should post is in your local state or region thread here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you Perhaps a local has fought the same battle and has some insight. Secondly, take a look here as well https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/37/local-chicken-laws-ordinances-and-how-to-change-them
Might be a long haul but you can perhaps find some useful strategies. Best wishes in your quest and thank you for joining BYC!

Thank you for your help! I'm from Ontario, Canada. The 50' issue is fairly unique to our community and there is no stated reason for this distance. We have provided the city with other cities' bylaws citing shorter distances, but now we need to prove WHY a shorter distance is better, or at the very least, acceptable.

Where should I post this issue and ask for help from other BYC members?

Please post on "Canadians, check in here." so others may rally round you - or even know of other folks that successfully won restrictions lessened in their area. Hope you will be successful. I am surprised that an immensely populated city like Chicago (USA) allows chickens - even roosters. If they can allow them any place can or should

I sincerely hope you can keep your girls...it's hard for some people to understand chickens can be pets as well as farm animals. Good luck to you.

    And thanks for joining us!
