Our city started a backyard chicken ordinanace fairly recently. Having had chickens as a youngster I decided it would be fun to participate. After first deciding on bantams for our backyard flock we needed to decide which breed. Since our priorities were 1) friendly pets 2) attractive birds 3) decent egg production 4) tolerates confinement well, we came up with a few breeds of interest: Sussex, Welsummers and Wyandottes all stood out as favorites but we ultimately decided on Silver laced Barnvelder bantams and are so happy that we did. We currently house 4 beautiful girls (the boys had to live on farms outside the city limits) in our homemade coop and fully enclosed run. The girls get access to the fenced yard when we can be with them as we had an early hawk scare that we're not willing to re-live. At just over 6 months (and in the dead of winter) we recently had the excitement of our first eggs (at 37g each!).
I've been researching chickens for several years. I grew up in the country where several family members had properties with a variety of farm animals. My husband and I hope to move to an acreage in the next few years where we can keep animals and spend more time enjoying time outdoors. Backyard chickens has been an amazing resource in planning our current and future flock.
We currently have one 6 year old Whippet and will be adding a new Whippet puppy this spring. My husband loves wood working, and being outdoors - he designed and built our coop and run. I am an avid gardener and cook who enjoys yoga, hiking, photography and meditation as well as caring for our home and family. The chickens definitely add to the enjoyment of our life and home!
