Looking to have 3-4 chickens in my yard. Last time I had chickens was over 40 years ago so my knowledge is extremely limited. Not looking to eat them as my kids would be upset but would enjoy the fresh eggs.
Which breeds are best suited for my area. Back yard is 1/4 to 1/3 acre.
Would prefer quiet chickens as one neighbor is very persnickety.

Welcome to BYC!
Have you verified that you are permitted birds..both with governing locality and HOA if you are in one? This is always important, but particularly with a neighbor you anticipate possible issues with.
Do you have an egg color preference?

Our county bans most from having chickens but we have enough land to be allowed.
Color of eggs is not an issue but quality would be.

Again, I'm casting my vote for leghorns. I have two white ones but you can also get brown leghorns and exchequer leghorns. My WLHs lay extra large white eggs, 6 - 7 per week.

*disclaimer, individual results may vary (because they are each individual birds, lol)*

I find crested cream legbars to be very personable and they are excellent layers of lively blue eggs. The ones I've kept have been quiet birds. Well suited to your climate.
Salmon faverolle have an excellent reputation for friendliness and, by most reports, quietness. Possibly not as well suited, but doable.

Thought leghorns are loud, am I wrong ?
Mine aren't. Don't get me wrong, they are talkative but not overly loud. Now, my Delaware and Sussex on the other hand. Boy howdy, do those girls squawk up a storm!
