Hello

:welcome
My name is Michael I grew up on a farm raising chickens and ostriches. We ended up selling all of our birds and about a year ago my wife has peaked interest in birds. She has become quite the encyclopedia on chickens but we are still newbies to some degree. I’ve been out of the chicken loop for quite some time so I decided to join the crowd. We started our flock of chickens and ducks about a year ago and we would like to expand to blonde or white emus. I didn’t mind the ostriches but with me traveling for work I don’t think she could handle them by herself. Hoping to learn some more while sipping on my coffee in the mornings.
Welcome to BYC! I have ducks. You will most certainly learn lots of new things during your morning visits!

Welcome Aboard to both you and your wife ... and all the pretty little (and not so little) birdies! Where in the world are you that you've had ostriches? That is SO cool!

We were in Aledo, IL they were definitely birds that caught the eye of the county. I would always see someone stop by to check them out. The ostrich meat we tried selling to the local grocery store, and even the local happy joes made an ostrich pizza. The business really never took off like all of the other ostrich farmers like us thought because no one knew what Ratite was. It was the meat of the future but we failed to educate the public on what it was and It’s advantages over beef. They seen the RAT and that was the unappealing factor for them. Any more it’s about reliving and educating my wife, son and my nieces and nephews on what life on the farm used to be.

@Pyxis do you have a Breeder that you would recommend? I’m having a hard time finding a Breeder. I know they are out of season but you would almost think someone would have some chicks that hatched a few months ago. Thanks in advance.

I do know some breeders, but none of them will have chicks now. Blondes and whites are still fairly new, and most breeders have waiting lists for chicks each year that fill up quick. I could point you to some breeders to get on the list for this coming year's chicks if you wanted :)

Mine are too young to be breeding this coming year, so I can't offer to put you on my list, or you'd be waiting a couple years, haha.
