I am so glad you've decided to join this great community; you won't find a friendlier and more helpful place to learn about chickens and all their keepings!

I looked at your photo and wondered, and your post answered for me in saying you were both practicing falconers! What has the experience with that been for you, and how long have you been at it? I've always been extremely interested in it, but have yet to see anyone hunt with a bird in person. How many birds do you have currently? I have so many questions, if you cannot tell.

Hi! There's a lot to unpack with falconry, so feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like.

I've been a falconer for ~5 years now. I've primarily flown red tailed hawks, but I've also flown a couple of aplomado falcons (the imprint male is the one in my photo), and a merlin. Falcons are probably my favorite. I like their style in hunting, and I like the quarry (other birds). With my red tails I would primarily hunt squirrels, though we took a few rabbits too. My targets with falcons were primarily sparrows, starling, and pigeon, along with a few accidental grasshoppers. I'd wanted to hunt quail, but they're in short supply in Florida.

I'm looking forward to moving up north in a couple of months. The vegetation doesn't ever really fall off the trees/bushes down here, which makes hunting with a raptor very difficult. Plus hot and exhausting work.

I don't have any falconry birds right now, and neither does my husband, since we are in the process of moving. Moving is hard enough without falconry birds to add to the mix. :pIt's also state regulated, so we need time to build new facilities to house the birds, and switch our permits to a new state etc.

Heehee!! :lau Wait until you become infected with chicken math!! I should only have 6 but have 13 at the moment....I figure I will keep the extras through the winter for added heat and then see which ones I can sell in the spring! Lucky I built a MUCH larger coop than what I thought I would need.....
