I would just add to build bigger than you think you will need for the amount of chickens you think you will have, because we always end up with more chickens than we originally plan.Hello, Lexi, and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
Start out by determining how many chickens you want, decide on the right breed for you then design and build a truly predator proof chicken coop with a minimum of 4 sq ft/bird, 10-12" of roost space/bird and an attached run with 15-20 sq ft/bird and you will be off to a good start.
Spend time here reading articles on how to raise chicks with MHPs or brooder plates, flock management and coop/run designs. Ask questions.
Be sure to take this egg-cellent advice!Welcome to BYC, Lexi! Good luck with your chickens, they will be great for your kids to help out with. Are you starting out with chicks? Don't get straight run unless you have someplace to put extra cockerels. It is no fun to fall in love with some little chicks, and then find them all crowing one day, lol. Make sure you have your coop ready before you get the chickens, and make absolutely sure its predator proof. Not fun to have something eat all of them, especially once kids are attached. Feel free to ask questions along the way!![]()
