My name is Lexi!
My family and I are moving to Plattsmouth, Nebraska in a few days and we are really wanting to get a chicken flock started! My husband and I had roughly 200 head of cattle so we are no strangers to the farm lifestyle. We are really wanting to get a self sustainable animal that our 3 kiddos can help take care of and so we decided chickens!!
We look forward to all the advice and fun posts to come!

P.s any advice on how to start out would be sooooo appreciated!
Thank you!!
Lexi

Welcome Lexi! 200 cattle, wow! Anyway, chickens are a great pet and breakfast provider and you'll never regret getting them.

When I was younger my parents taught me how to take care of the pullets and left them in my hands, and it has taught me how to be dependable! Chickens can teach you life long lessons!

So glad you found us! Please come here with any questions or pictures of your chickens (in the future)! An nd most importantly, have fun!

Welcome to BYC, Lexi! Good luck with your chickens, they will be great for your kids to help out with. Are you starting out with chicks? Don't get straight run unless you have someplace to put extra cockerels. It is no fun to fall in love with some little chicks, and then find them all crowing one day, lol. Make sure you have your coop ready before you get the chickens, and make absolutely sure its predator proof. Not fun to have something eat all of them, especially once kids are attached. Feel free to ask questions along the way! :)

Hello, Lexi, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Start out by determining how many chickens you want, decide on the right breed for you then design and build a truly predator proof chicken coop with a minimum of 4 sq ft/bird, 10-12" of roost space/bird and an attached run with 15-20 sq ft/bird and you will be off to a good start.
Spend time here reading articles on how to raise chicks with MHPs or brooder plates, flock management and coop/run designs. Ask questions.
